Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare, immune-mediated neurologic disorder of the peripheral nervous system that is characterized by ascending weakness and paralysis. Between 3000 and 6000 cases of GBS (1-2 cases/100 000 persons) are diagnosed annually in the United States.
